UW COMMENCEMENT

The 2022 University of Washington Commencement was a tough project for me. I could have easily gone with a straightforward approach to graduation, gold sparkles and script fonts to celebrate a well-deserved walk across a stage in front of friends and family, but this ceremony wasn't just another regular occasion. 2022 was the year the three previous classes all got to have their moment on stage together because of how the pandemic caused the previous two ceremonies to be cancelled.

What struck me about these students was their perseverance and how, against all odds, they leaned upon one another to complete their tasks. Living through the pandemic, it didn't feel like we were doing our best as a community, because we weren't. People were dying and relationships were strained because we could no longer communicate in person. Now that we are able to look back at those years though, we can see our perseverance stamped all over our memories. We made food for one another, had weekly check-ins, and jointly mourned those we lost. All of this hid just under the surface as we lived through the experience but now shines brightly in our memories of those years. This inspired me to use a simple pattern of different shades of purple to represent how the UW community came together in a show of support for the most important people in our schools, the students.
